Kids Nature Activities
We love outdoor play ideas and even more with FREE ideas for kids!
That’s why DIY outdoor activities for kids were a must find this year.
We’ve played the coolest backyard game on the planet!
Now, it’s imperative that the kids learn some old tricks too.
For example, when I was a young girl I loved playing outside making mud pies, running my feet through the grass, and starring at the sky making things out of the clouds.
Since I knew I loved those things as a child.
I wanted my kiddos and placements to have the same fun I did.
As a mom and foster mom, easy ideas are the best.
With that said, check out the most recent activity we made for FREE!
Outdoor Play for Kids
Neat right?
Recently, I was at a garage sale and came across those little wooden pieces.
In fact, at first, I couldn’t figure out what they were.
The first thing that came to my mind was the following…
- wood log
- coaster holder (for teeny tiny cups, lol)
- wood slice
- tree trunk
- handcrafted wooden log
It turns out that they originally were used for wooden place cardholders at an Amish wedding and they were giving them away for free.
I knew at that moment, I could figure out something to do with these imaginative little wooden pieces.
As we were leaving the yard sale my cousin asked me. “What are you going to do with those?”
“I told her that I’m not sure yet but I’m crafty so I would come up with some sort of craft idea.”
Well, the time has come and it’s this totally amazing outdoor activity that you’re reading about right now, lol.
Free Nature Activities
How I came up with it was thinking about the things I liked to do most outdoor as a small child.
For example, these ideas below…
- Make wishes with dandelions
- Lie on a blanket or in the grass and sky-gaze
- Start a Rock Collection
- Play tic-tac-toe with sticks and flowers or rocks
- Make a “Pie” with mud, flowers, and grass
- Made my name out of sticks
As a matter of fact, you can grab a free printable though the link below today!
In this link, you will find the same outdoor activities above that could be printed out and placed on rocks, wooden slices, or sticks that you find in the backyard.
After you print out the outdoor activity printable.
Next, choose one project that you would like your kids (or students) to work on that day and hide it somewhere fun for the kids to find.
Each child will run around the yard and see who could find the wood slice with the fun secret message on it.
The secret message will include the free outdoor play DIY that they’ll get to do that day.
It will become an outdoor experience that they’ll remember into adulthood.
Do you have a favorite outdoor activity that you liked to do as a kid? Please leave it in the comments.
We’d love to hear about it!

Absolutely! You could easily change it up with pillow fights, building a fort in the living room, and/or a bubble bath.
