Meet the Turkey Feather Party Game.
It’s colorful, ridiculously easy to set up, and gets everybody OUTSIDE and moving for a few minutes.
The idea is simple: hide colorful turkey feathers around the yard, send your little turkeys racing to find one, and reveal which secret feather color wins the round.
Basically, it’s a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt, race, and luck game rolled into one.
And nobody has to know you planned it because the kids were starting to climb the furniture.
What Is the Turkey Feather Party Game?
Think of this as a super-simple Thanksgiving feather hunt.
Before each round, the host secretly chooses one winning feather color.
Players start together at the starting line.
When you yell GO!, everyone races to find and grab ONE hidden feather.
Once everybody has a feather, reveal the secret winning color.
Anyone holding that color wins the round!
That’s it.
No complicated scorecards.
No 37-step instructions.
Just:
RUN. FIND. GRAB. GOBBLE. 🦃
Okay, technically nobody has to gobble.
But should they?
Absolutely.
What You’ll Need
You don’t need much for this one:
- Colorful craft feathers
- Painter’s tape, rope, or a marker for the starting line
- Small pieces of removable poster putty if attaching feathers to safe surfaces
- A cup, bowl, or bag for choosing the winning colors
- Optional whistle
- Optional Thanksgiving prizes

Choose a pack with several obvious colors such as orange, yellow, red, green, blue, and purple.
The more colors you use, the more suspense you’ll have when it’s time to announce the winner.
How to Set Up the Turkey Feather Game
This part takes just a few minutes.
1. Pick Your Feather Colors
Choose about four to six different colors.
For example:
Orange
Yellow
Red
Green
Blue
Purple
You’ll want multiple feathers in each color so several players can end up with the same one.
2. Hide the Turkey Feathers
Scatter the feathers around your playing area.
You can tuck them:
- Around trees
- Beside pumpkins
- Near bushes
- Along a fence
- Around hay bales
- Near outdoor decorations
- In piles of leaves where they’re still visible
Don’t make them impossible to find.
We’re entertaining children here, not training Thanksgiving Navy SEALs. 😂
3. Make a Starting Line
Put everyone behind one designated line.
Painter’s tape works great on a patio or indoor floor. Outdoors, you can simply use a rope, chalk line, or two cones.
For a cleaner race setup, grab a set of colorful game cones here!
Those can be reused for relay races, birthday games, obstacle courses, and approximately 700 other things kids will invent.
4. Prepare Your Secret Winning Colors
Write each feather color on a separate slip of paper and put the slips into a bowl.
Before each round, secretly draw ONE.
Don’t tell anybody.
That is your winning turkey feather.
Now we’re ready.
How to Play the Turkey Feather Party Game
Everybody starts behind the line.
The host secretly draws the winning feather color.
Then yell:
READY… SET… GOBBLE!
Players race into the playing area.
Each person can grab ONE feather only.
Once everyone has found a feather, bring the group back together.
Now comes my favorite part.
Milk this moment.
Look at everybody’s feathers.
Pretend you’re thinking.
Build unnecessary Thanksgiving-level suspense. 😂
Then announce:
“THE WINNING TURKEY FEATHER IS… ORANGE!”
Everyone holding an orange feather wins that round.
Collect the feathers, hide them again, choose another secret color, and play another round.
What If More Than One Kid Gets the Winning Color?
Perfect!
You can have multiple winners.
That actually makes this game easier for younger children because nobody has to be eliminated.
If you only want one grand champion, keep playing rounds and award one point every time someone finds the winning color.
After five rounds, whoever has the most points wins.
Tied?
Welcome to the…
TURKEY TROT TIEBREAKER 🦃
Have the tied players put a feather between their knees and waddle to the finish line.
First turkey across wins.
Yes, it looks ridiculous.
That’s precisely why we’re doing it.
Make It a Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt
Want less racing and more searching?
Easy.
Hide the feathers farther apart and let players hunt for them.
The rule stays the same:
You may only bring back ONE feather.
That’s important because there’s always going to be one child who comes sprinting back carrying 26 feathers like they’ve personally won Thanksgiving.
Nice try, Kevin.
Pick one. 😂
This variation works especially well for younger kids because they don’t have to be the fastest runner to win.
Indoor Turkey Feather Game
Cold?
Raining?
Snowing because apparently November has chosen violence?
Bring the game inside.
Hide feathers around a living room, classroom, church room, basement, or party space.
Good hiding places include:
- Beside pillows
- Under chairs
- Near Thanksgiving decorations
- On windowsills
- Beside baskets
- Around doorways
Keep everything at kid level and avoid hiding feathers anywhere unsafe or near candles, fireplaces, food-prep areas, or breakable decorations.
For indoor play, I would skip the running and make it a Turkey Feather Hunt instead.
Turkey Feather Game for Preschoolers
For little ones, make it ridiculously simple.
Spread brightly colored feathers where they’re easy to see.
Let every child find one.
Then reveal the winning color.
Nobody gets eliminated, and you can play as many rounds as they want.
You could also call out a color instead:
“FIND ME A RED TURKEY FEATHER!”
Now it becomes a color-recognition activity too.
Turkey Feather Game for Older Kids
Older kids?
Oh, we’re making this harder.
Try one of these rules:
- Players must turkey-waddle instead of run.
- Players have to find a feather while keeping one hand behind their back.
- Hide feathers in harder locations.
- Add an obstacle course before the feather hunt.
- Players must return to the finish line before another player can take their turn.
- Make it a team relay.
And my personal favorite:
The Gobble Rule
You found the winning feather?
Congratulations.
Now prove you’re worthy.
Give us your BEST turkey gobble. 😂
Adults may judge on volume, commitment, and complete lack of dignity.
Turn It Into a Turkey Feather Relay Race
This is great when you have a larger group.
Divide everyone into teams.
Place a basket of feathers at the opposite end of the playing area.
One player from each team races down, grabs ONE feather, and returns.
Then the next teammate goes.
Continue until everyone has a feather.
Only AFTER the relay is finished do you reveal the secret winning color.
Each matching feather earns the team one point.
This adds a hilarious element of luck because being the fastest team doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to win.
Play Roll a Turkey Next

How Many People Can Play?
This game is really flexible.
You can play with a few kids in the backyard or divide a larger Thanksgiving gathering into groups.
If you have a big crowd, simply add more feathers.
The important thing is having enough feathers that every player can find one during each round.
How Long Does the Game Take?
That’s completely up to you.
Play one quick round if you need a five-minute activity, or keep going and turn it into a tournament.
For a Thanksgiving party, I’d plan on about 15 to 20 minutes.
That’s long enough to get everybody laughing without making the game feel like it needs its own halftime show.
Can Adults Play?
PLEASE let the adults play.
You haven’t experienced Thanksgiving joy until you’ve watched grown people sprint toward a tree because they desperately need a purple craft feather.
For an adults-only round, make everyone turkey-waddle instead of run.
Then put an actual prize on the line.
Suddenly Aunt Linda is an athlete.
Why This Thanksgiving Game Works
The reason I love games like this is because they’re SIMPLE.
Thanksgiving already has enough going on.
You’ve got food cooking.
People arriving.
Kids bouncing off furniture.
Somebody needs ice.
Somebody else forgot the rolls.
And someone has opened the oven 14 times even though you’ve specifically asked them not to.
You don’t need a Thanksgiving game that requires an instruction manual.
Hide feathers.
Pick a color.
Let everybody loose.
Laugh.
That’s my kind of Thanksgiving game. 🦃😂
