Tip: Easy ways to decorate is to put streamers and balloons on their bedroom door or their vehicle. I know my kids love walking in the living room and seeing a sign that says, “Happy Birthday!” this just makes it even more special.
Surprise Birthday Breakfast
If you want to surprise with a simple idea choose breakfast! Every child, tween, teen, or adults love breakfast. I think in America we call it the breakfast of champions. A few ideas that could make this day more special is to create rainbow pancakes, yogurt banana split, a breakfast pop tarts!
Birthday Cake
It’s so much fun to bake with my kids in the kitchen. We create memories and they love doing it! A special birthday tradition could be to make a cake with your teen and let them pick out the kind of cake, the icing, and decorations for it.
Most of my kids love birthday cake but my son isn’t always a fan. Alternatives to birthday cake are just as good. Great ideas could include the following…
- Brownies
- Donuts
- Cookies
- Banana Split
- Strawberry Shortcake
Teen Birthday Party
Instead of creating their birthday party for them. Give your teen a budget and let them design the entire day. This would include the place where the party is held, menu options, and cake.
I know when I was a teenager I loved creating my own cake. I would add all kinds of color, sprinkles, and edible glitter!
Sleepover
I know, I know a sleepover can get a little crazy, lol. All the laughing, snickering and carrying on. My husband always looks at me like I’m insane when I tell him that our daughter wants to have a sleepover and invite 13 girls. He’s like… I’m staying with my parents, lol. He doesn’t haha but it makes me chuckle. :0)
Our daughter loveeeees having sleepovers so this is one of her favorite things to do for her birthday. All I have to provide is snacks, pizza, and drinks and she pretty much has the rest covered.
Special Time
I don’t care how old my babies get. They’ll be 152 and I will still be telling them I love them and how much joy it brought to my life when they were born. Taking that time to let your teen know how special they are to you. That time is worth a million dollars even if they don’t act like it, it does. 🙂
Birthday Dinner
Who doesn’t like to have their choice of dinner options?! A fun way to celebrate their birthday is to let the birthday boy or girl celebrate it by picking out what they get to eat for dinner but of course, picking a restaurant to eat at is that much cooler!

I’ve got a while to go before I have to consider these things but I am sharing this with my bestie who has a 14 year old girl. I know she has struggled with how to handle birthdays as the teen years have come on. You have some great ideas!!!
