What is an Adoption Day Anniversary or Gotcha Day
As a matter of fact, there are many different opinions when it comes to adoption day celebrations.
Remembering adoption day could lead to triggers of loss of biological family for some kids and I can fully understand why some parents choose not to celebrate.
However, it can also lead to new beginnings and celebration with foster or adoptive families!
Adoption Anniversary Celebration Ideas
In fact, many adoptive parents want to mark this day as a sentimental way of securing their child’s permanency and want them to feel loved and cherished.
Therefore a lot of adoptive families choose to honor this day with a gift or celebration to help make the child feel special.
With that said, here are some ideas that will help you celebrate for gotcha day celebrations, adoption day anniversaries, or a special birthday celebration.
Design the Day
Instead of creating their adoption celebration for them. Give your son or daughter a budget and let them design the entire day for the whole family to enjoy!
It could be play-doh in PJs or something outside the home. Whatever the case may be you and I both know they’d highly enjoy putting it all together.
Bake a Cake
It’s so much fun to bake with my kids in the kitchen. We create memories and they love doing it!
A special tradition could be to make a cake with your child and let them pick out the kind of cake, icing, and decorations for it.
Imagine how cute the cake or cupcakes would turn out!
Alternatives to the cake are just as good. Great ideas include some of the following:
- Brownies
- Cookies
- Banana Split
- Root Beer Floats
Pick Dinner
Who doesn’t like to have their choice of dinner options?! A fun way to celebrate their special day is to let them celebrate by picking dinner.
Of course, having them help make it or picking a restaurant to eat at is that much cooler!
Ways to Celebrate Gotcha Day
It doesn’t stop there. Many other options include a party, camping, family vacation, an event, the fair and more.
I have even heard of friends taking their kids to Disney to celebrate their adoption day or anniversary date! If you live near Dollywood you can get in FREE! Go here for more details!
However, if you don’t live near Walt Disney World or an amusement park. Don’t worry, I’m sure any Adoption Anniversary Celebration Ideas will be cherished!

My daughter was adopted by my husband. We had a special dinner and when she was younger she got presents. She’s 45 and my husband passed away and we still have a special dinner. I think it is super important to acknowledge our special family day
That is really awesome that your daughter was adopted by your husband! I love that after everything you’ve been through you still have special dinners to remember. I’m sure your daughter cherishes that more than you know! 🙂
I can’t share ‘adoption’ anecdotes, but what I can say is that I agree 100% with you saying that it depends on whether the kid has adjusted well to the adoption situation…Anyway it is good to spend occasion doing something fun, even just for the sake of spending the day together
