It’s my kind of cool! 😎
I love putting a twist on life and getting out and doing things that are out of the ordinary! I just think that is part of living; doing things that are crazy, fun, unique, and non-traditional. Such as an Amish Garage Sale Experience!
Amish Garage Sale Experience
My Aunts were telling my mom and I about their Amish Garage Sale Experience. How the Amish like to set their prices very low and have really good stuff. Items that I never imagined the Amish having including non-traditional clothing, Disney toys, and more. We were shocked, I had never thought about going to an Amish garage sale, have you?
On this particular day in May, it was a Wednesday, over 100 Amish families were hosting garage sales. My Aunt Sandy, Aunt Tammy, my cousin Dawn, my mother, and I got together and started out on our Amish garage sale adventure.
History of Middlefield, Ohio
Now let me fill you in on a little bit of history… A small town called Middlefield is located in Northeast Ohio. It is home to the 4th largest Amish community in the United States. There are many Amish that not only live in Middlefield, but run restaurants, and own and operate local businesses in the area. Some of these shops include handmade furniture, bake goods and local produce shops, and more. If you drive through this small town especially in the summer or on a Friday night you will see all sorts of Amish buggies on the road.
About the Amish Garage Sales
It was great to be able to converse and interact with the Amish and explore what seemed like another world. The world felt like being back in the olden days but having the luxury of being more in-depth with Amish culture. The horses running in the yard, the clothes hung on a clothesline, the outhouses in the backyard, the men working in the field, and the smell of baked goods from the window.
At almost every Amish garage sale that we stopped at the Amish were kind, welcoming, and considerate. One of the ladies even helped me put a table in the back of my Aunt’s vehicle. That was unexpected and very generous of her.
The day progressed and I was able to find all sorts of items and for really cheap! Those items included home decor, chalk markers, crafts, toys that help with fine motor skills, Amish baby doll clothes, an outside furniture table, and of course great smelling and tasting baked goods. You can’t go to an Amish garage sale without typically having all sorts of choices of baked goods. Our favorite is the Fry pies.
The entire experience is worthwhile and really interesting. If you have a local Amish community or are interested in traveling I highly suggest venturing out and taking advantage of the opportunity of an Amish garage sale. I’m sure glad we did! Now I’m hooked! 🙂
